Earnestly Contending… volume 2

It is our prayer that you will find the contents of this most recent issue of  “Earnestly Contending for the Faith” edifying and useful in your Christian walk.

The Bible Presbyterian Church has a long and proud history of “earnestly contending for the faith once delivered to the saints.”  This bi-monthly publication, we hope, will be found to be solidly in that tradition and we ask for your prayers as we undertake this project.

These are challenging days and it is important that the believer be fully equipped to serve Christ faithfully and …be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ (1 Peter 3:15-16).

We hope this little newsletter will help towards that end, as well as clarify some of the issues of the day—including those within our own family.

Back issues are available here.

Labor for what you pray for: and think not that praying is all that you have to do, to get God's grace, any more than to get your food and raiment; but you must labor, and beg, for God's blessing thereon.

Devotional Feelings

No doubt, devotional feelings were habitual in the hearts of our first parents.  No doubt, they sent up, more formally, their morning and evening prayers; but more time is needed to daw off the thoughts from visible thigns, and to concentrate them on the great invisible Giver of existence.  Short snatches of time ar enot sufficient to perform this noblest of all duties in a proper manner. A whole day, at certain periods, was needed, so that there might be time for the contemplation of divine things, and for the full and free exercises of devotion.

A Day of Salvation

God hath made it our duty, by His institution, to set apart this day [the Sabbath] for special seeking of His grace and blessing.  From which we may argue, that He will be especially ready to confer His grace on those who thus seek it... The Sabbath day is an accepted time, a day of salvation, a time wherein God especially loves to be sought, and loves to be found...

Wonderfully Made

John Flavel

John Flavel

"I am wonderfully made"; the original word' is 'very full.'  The Vulgate renders it, "painted as with a needle," i.e., richly embroidered with nerves and veins.  O, the skillful workmanship that is in that one part, the eye!  How has it forced some to acknowledge God upon the examination of it!  Providence, when it went about this work, had its model or pattern before it, according to which it molded every part, "In thy book all my members were written".  Have you an integral perfection and fullness of members?  It is because He wrote them all in His book, or painted your body according to that exact model which He drew of you in His own gracious purpose before you had a being.

Too much religion?

jcryle.jpgThere is not too much religion in the land now.  Destroy the sanctity of the Sabbath, and there would soon be far less.  Nothing in short, I believe, would so thoroughly advance the kingdom of Satan as to withdraw legal protection form the Lord's Day.  It would be a joy to the infidel; but it would be an insult and offense to God.

Have Questions? The Scriptures Have Answers.

What role does fasting play in the life of the Christian? Does God hear the prayers of non-believers? What exactly does propitiation mean?  Does the Bible say anything about donating organs?

Our panel of elders, pastors, and seminary professors answer these question as a part of our monthly Q&A session.  You can join us in person during the first Sunday School hour of every month.

Join us for prayer Wednesdays at 7 pm!

In all your prayers to God, consider how significant the name of Christ is in heaven.  If you come in the sense of your own unworthiness, and desire alone to be accepted in Him, you shall not be slighted or neglected.  If you send a child or a servant to a friend for a thing in your name, the request is yours; and he that denies child or servant, denies you.  Jesus Christ has sent you in His name, Go ask in My name; so that in effect the request becomes Christ's request.  God can no more deny your request in Christ's name than He can deny Christ Himself.
